Do you know the word "侘び寂び(Wabi-Sabi)"? Wabi-Sabi is one of the representative aesthetic consciousness of Japan. However, because Wabi-Sabi is an advanced concept based on the spirit of "Zen", even many Japanese cannot truly understand the meaning of it.
Therefore, it is quite difficult to use language to explain Wabi-Sabi. Based on such actual situation, next I will try my best to explain to you in simple language what the Wabi-Sabi is.
What is "Wabi-Sabi"?
The concept of ""Wabi-Sabi"" was created and improved by ""Sennorikyu（1522-1591）"", a great Sado Master of Japan. After this, through a long time, this concept has gradually become familiar to the Japanese.
Generally speaking, people like to talk about it with the whole word "侘び寂び(Wabi-Sabi)", but in fact, "侘び寂び(Wabi-Sabi)" is a compound word combined with the words of "侘び(Wabi)" and "寂び(Sabi)". Although the meaning of these two words are very similar, they do have subtle differences.
""侘び(Wabi)"" means simplicity and roughness. Then, combined with the concept of aesthetic consciousness, it will be extended in the meaning that ""the mind can enrich even in the situation where poverty is poor and material is scarce"".
""寂び(Sabi)"" means aging or degradation. Then, combined with the concept of aesthetic consciousness, it will be extended in the thinking that ""the decaying things have their own beauty even if the years change"".
For example, the leaves are falling, the teabowls are rusting, such things are olden or aged, we call them ""寂び(Sabi)"". And among these things, you can find their simplicity and insufficiency, that is, the ""侘び(Wabi)"". Even though they are the declining things, you can also discover their incomplete beauty (a kind of beauty that is full of ages from the appearance of an old object or a person). In other words, the spirit of discovering ""寂び(Sabi)"" is the ""侘び(Wabi)"".
In summary, it can be said like that:
""侘び(Wabi)"": Mental preparation for spirit
""寂び(Sabi)"": The situation in your eyes
""侘び寂び(Wabi-Sabi)""is not the opposite thing, first of all, if you don't feel the bearing of them, you can not know the beauty of Wabi-Sabi. For me, Adachi, as a Japanese, until now I don't know the way to Wabi-Sabi. So let's explore this ""Wabi-Sabi"" that can make the spiritual world richer!
Ah, the incomparable sado(tea ceremony) world... Inviting you to the ""quiet"" world (Part 1)
